Why Mice Are Really Nice Pets
Posted By : Guest Filed Under : Pet Care | Rats and Mice
Pet mice are epic explorers and there’s hours of fun to be had watching them as they nimbly scale ropes, pause and scent the air, nibble on tasty treats that they hold delicately in their front paws and dash recklessly through tunnels. However, these compact pets have quite a long list of requirements when it comes to helping them lead their best mouse life.   On the run The first thing you need to know about having mice as pets is that they need plenty of space to exercise, forage, play, climb, investigate and interact with their cage mates. In the wild, mice are extremely active animals, travelling many hundreds of metres in one day. Their ideal enclosure needs to be a large, narrow-spaced barred cage, with gaps no more than 9mm so they can’t squeeze through them. Glass or plastic enclosures aren’t suitable for mice because they don’t have very good ventilation, which can cause breathing problems. The accommodation needs to be lined with lino an.. Bonding With Your Small Pets
Posted By : Guest Filed Under : Rabbits | Guinea Pigs | Chinchillas | Hamsters | Pet Care | Rats and Mice | Degus | Gerbils
There are cat people and there are dog people – but there are also some who believe that small pets are where it’s at. Whether you cherish your chinchillas, have a passion for bunnies, adore guinea pigs, or have a soft spot for rats, hamsters, gerbils or degus, as a committed and responsible owner you want your small furries have the best life they can. Building a closer bond with your little pets will enhance and enrich your relationship with them.   A great way to build this special bond is by hand-feeding. This is something that will take time and patience, but once your small pal happily accepts a tasty treat from your hand, is incredibly rewarding. The key is to take things slowly, so that your little chums learn to associate you with good things and begin to place their trust in you. Am I in danger? Small pets are prey animals, which means they think anything approaching is a potential predator – even you. Don’t loom over them (as a pred.. [More] guineapighandfeeding2.jpg

Christmas Perils For Our Pets
Posted By : Guest Filed Under : Rabbits | Guinea Pigs | Chinchillas | Hamsters | Pet Care | Rats and Mice | Degus | Gerbils | Dogs | Cats
‘Tis the season to be jolly but, for our pets, it’s also a time of hazardous foods, poisonous plants and dangerous decorations. Ensure the four-legged members of your family have a safe and happy Christmas by following DR SUZANNE MOYES’ festive advice For those pets who have seen a Christmas or two, the sudden arrival of a pine tree, tinsel and plates piled high with mince pies, will likely be taken in their stride. However, for young animals, all these exciting new things require close inspection, which can lead to all sorts of problems.   All You Can't Eat At this time of the year, many of the foods we love to tuck into will do our pets more harm than good – so those pleading eyes must be ignored. It’s far better to keep your pets on their usual Burgess diet. Festive foods on the blacklist include: Pigs in blankets: Fatty, salty meats such as pork can lead to pancreatitis. Mince pies and Christmas cake: Raisins and sultanas (a.. [More] catchristmastree.jpg

While they might have a unique appeal that not everyone can appreciate, rats are one of the cleanest pets you can own – and they even laugh when you tickle them...The thought of rats as pets may not be everyone’s cup of cocoa, yet these clean, clever creatures possess lots of loveable qualities and make superstar animal companions… Squeaky Clean Contrary to popular belief, rats are fastidiously clean. Like cats, their tongues are rough, which helps them keep their coat spic and span. In fact, cleanliness is extremely important to a rat’s health – so it’s essential you keep their accommodation just as spotless by regularly cleaning out their cage using pet-safe disinfectant and replacing bedding material – but always add a little of the old bedding to the new so that your rats recognise their own special scent and don’t get stressed. Rats can also be trained to use a litter tray, which helps to keep their home even cleane.. [More] dumborat3.jpg

Importance Of Small Animal Bedding
Posted By : Guest Filed Under : Pet Cages | Rabbits | Guinea Pigs | Chinchillas | Bedding | Hamsters | Pet Care | Rats and Mice | Degus | Gerbils | Carefresh
The purpose of a substrate (bedding) used in small animal cages is to absorb bad smelling, urine odour. Small pets such as hamsters, gerbils, mice, rats and guinea pigs need a clean habitat in order to thrive and remain healthy. Therefore the more absorbent a bedding, the better it controls nasty smells. There are a wide range of substrates available, each with its own positive and negative aspects. You can use shredded paper as a substrate, but it won’t absorb odours, so your pet’s cage could get stinky fast. Make sure to use only paper that hasn’t been printed, as ink can be very dangerous to small animals. Only newspaper with black ink is considered to be safe. Another suitable option for substrate are paper and wood pellets. These pellets have the benefit of being very absorbent. It may be difficult for some pets to burrow through it, however, and can be a bit expensive. Burgess Excel Bedding is also a good option and made from natural straw i.. Why Small Pets Need Enrichment?
Posted By : Guest Filed Under : Small Animal Toys | Guinea Pigs | Chinchillas | Bedding | Hamsters | Pet Inn | Pet Care | Rats and Mice | Degus | Gerbils | Carefresh
Many rodents such as hamsters, gerbils, mice, domesticated rats, guinea pigs, chinchillas and degus are commonly kept as pets. All of these animals can make great pets when they are cared for properly with the right diet and proper housing. Unfortunately, many people get these animals as pets and don’t realize that in addition to good food, a safe cage, and clean bedding, these pets – just like cats and dogs – need environmental stimulation to be happy and to thrive. Many wild rodents are very social animals living with numerous others of their own kind in their normal habitat. In the wild, they have “jobs” – searching for food, finding mates, building nests. Most rodents nest in communities and share parental responsibilities. They spend 30-50% of the time they are awake grooming each other. When young rodents are separated from their mothers, they often show an increase in disease, are more anxious and aggressive, and are less likely to.. [More] carefreshhamster.jpg

What Is Best Hamster Bedding?
Posted By : Guest Filed Under : Bedding | Hamsters | Rats and Mice | Gerbils | Carefresh
There are two types of bedding materials you need for a hamster. One is the material that goes down on the floor of the cage and the other type is a nesting material that goes into the sleeping house. There are dozens of different kinds of hamster bedding out there which may include wood, paper, straw and grains in the form of shavings, pellets or stripes. But what is the best hamster bedding? Some of the bedding out there is great for your furry little hamster, but some kinds are just downright terrible for keeping a hamster happy and healthy. Deciding on which type of bedding to get depends on a few factors including: the type of cage you have and the type of hamster you have. But really, it’s a kind of a trial and error process. Some hamsters might have allergies to certain types or they might like to eat other types. Additionally, some might just be messier with their bedding than others. The amount that should be placed into the bottom of the cage depends on.. [More] hamsterincarefresh.jpg

Are Rats Happy On Their Own?
Posted By : Guest Filed Under : Pet Care | Rats and Mice
Rats are one of those magnificent animals that make incredible pets but were ignored for many years before their popularity really took hold. Part of the reasons for that is of course because wild rats are very different to the domesticated pets you can adopt. Another reason is that there was simply not a lot of information available on caring for these pets – early rat owners probably made a few mistakes. But we’ve learned a lot about rats over the years, including their need for companionship. Does your rat need a friend? Rats are very social creatures. They love living with friends and family. This makes them very different from some of the other small furries such as Syrian hamsters who prefer a solitary life, whereas Dwarf hamsters prefer company. Rats however don’t just enjoy the company, they thrive on it and need it to live a long and happy life. If you have a lonely rat, it’s time to get your furry a friend. But be careful here, it&rs.. Benefits of Small Animal Chew Toys
Posted By : Guest Filed Under : Small Animal Toys | Pet Accesories | Hamsters | Pet Inn | Pet Care | Rats and Mice | Gerbils
For years, small pets were only provided with food, water and bedding, and they spent the majority of their days in their cages. However, today's small animal pet owners are more apt to recognize the importance of offering plenty of out-of-cage time mixed with positive social interaction and a variety of challenging toys to keep their pets happily occupied throughout the day.   Whether it’s called a toy or a treat, having something to chew on is top priority for small animals. These pets have teeth that grow continuously, and gnawing is a natural way for them to keep their teeth at the proper level to provide healthy eating habits and good dentition. But chew toys aren’t just a necessity, they’re also fun. Interactive Toys An increasing number of small animal pet owners seek interactive toys. Similar to dog owners who wish to play catch with their pets, small pet owners also crave one-on-one interactions with their pets. There is no need to ke.. [More] hamsterplaying.jpg
